WALL OF BIRDS STUDIES
Rare and original artwork from a spectacular chapter of ornithological history.

In 2015, artist Jane Kim completed the Wall of Birds, a 2,500 square-foot mural celebrating the diversity and evolution of birds at The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The mural, which took two-and-a-half years to create, is the only one in the world to showcase all 243 modern families of birds, with each creature painted life size, from the tiny Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird to the 30-foot Yutyrannus.

Before painting the birds on the wall, Jane drew graphite or pen and ink studies of her subjects. The studies were scanned, edited to life-sized proportions, printed as a template, and then traced on to the wall with transfer paper to create the final paintings.

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Wall of Birds, Ink Dwell is making its first public release of the Wall of Bird Studies, a rare and unique opportunity to bring Wall of Birds art into the home. These studies represent the only way for collectors to own an original piece of this historic mural.

Because the wall is so big, no single photo was capable of capturing the mural. A six-person team spent months photographing every square inch of the wall and then stitching together more than 700 pictures into one giant image. Viewers can zoom in and see every detail, every brush stroke on the wall. It’s also packed with natural history about each animal, real-time distribution data–even bird calls. Think: Google Maps for the Wall of Birds.
